Water Purification

Is Water Purification Necessary?

If you really want to drink cleaner water, you'll need to look into water purification.

But...is tap water really that bad? I spent all of my childhood and many adult years drinking it, cleaning dishes with it, and showering in it. And I think I'm a generally healthy person.

To be honest, I can't taste much difference between tap water, bottled water, and purified water. Maybe my taste buds aren't as sensitive as other people. Or maybe the water in my area is cleaner than in other areas. Sure, I've tasted truly awful tap water---the stuff that tastes like lead. If your water tastes that bad, you should buy water purifiers right away.

But what if the water in your home tastes alright to you and your family? Is pure water still a priority for you? I'm going to tell you, yes, it is. What you don't taste when you drink a glass of tap water are the hundreds of trace chemicals in it. And what you don't feel when you take a shower is all the chlorine entering your skin pores.

Chlorine, if you don't know, is a harsh drying agent. Repeated exposure, like daily showering in tap water, will damage your skin and hair. It causes dryness and itching and has even been linked to skin conditions like eczema and acne.

I recently stayed with my best friend from college and her husband. They're both real water snobs, if there is such a thing. But there was something I couldn't understand; they only had a water purifier on their kitchen faucet. One water filter in their entire house. What about the bathroom faucet? They used water to brush their teeth and wash their face? And how about the shower? They refuse to drink tap water, yet they'll stand under a stream of it for 5-10 minutes every day? They didn't seem to follow through on their belief in water purification.

I didn't ask them about this. But it made me think about what kind of water purifiers I was going to get for my place. If I really believed that tap water was bad for my health, I didn't want any of it getting into my body---even the water going into the washing machine was going to be purified.

So I decided on a whole house water filtration system.

It was installed by a plumber one weekend and now I don't have to worry about the purity of my water. It's a bigger investment upfront, but it's also "hands off" after that. Getting separate filters for each faucet and showerhead was too big a headache for me. Anyway, I'm happy with it.

At my website, I talk about the most effective type of water purification products on the market.
